New Delhi: Vodafone Idea (Vi) is accelerating its 5G rollout in India, aiming to catch up with rivals like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. The telecom operator has announced plans to expand its services to 90 additional cities over the next few months, signalling a major push in its Vi 5G expansion strategy.
Currently, Vi’s 5G network is live in 43 cities across 17 telecom circles. With the upcoming rollout, the company’s coverage is expected to grow to 133 cities by May 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening its position in the highly competitive Indian 5G market.
Where Is Vi 5G Expansion Happening Next?
The Vi 5G expansion is targeted, focusing on regions where demand for high-speed data is strong or expected to grow rapidly. Key areas include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Among the major cities slated for the rollout are Chennai, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Puducherry, Gandhinagar, Goa, and Kolhapur. Smaller but strategically important cities such as Ludhiana, Amritsar, Haridwar, Gangtok, Bhiwandi, and Udaipur are also part of Vi’s expansion plan. The strategy demonstrates that Vi is prioritizing quality and demand-driven growth rather than simply chasing numbers.
Technology Behind the Expansion
The Vi 5G expansion is being supported through collaborations with global telecom infrastructure leaders like Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung. These partnerships are expected to enhance network quality, reliability, and coverage as Vi continues its rollout.
Catching Up in the 5G Race
While Vi still lags behind Jio and Airtel in terms of 5G reach, this move underlines the company’s intent to compete aggressively. The coming months will be crucial in determining how effectively Vi can leverage this Vi 5G expansion to strengthen its foothold in India’s rapidly growing 5G market.
