Meta has begun rolling out its new paid subscription service Instagram Plus, marking a major shift in its revenue strategy beyond advertising. The company aims to offer premium tools and features for users willing to pay for enhanced control and customization. The launch of Instagram Plus follows testing across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, with gradual rollout now underway.
The introduction of Instagram Plus reflects Meta’s plan to diversify income sources while keeping core app features free for all users.
New Features Focused on Stories and Audience Control
The Instagram subscription is primarily designed for active users who frequently post stories and want better control over engagement. Subscribers will be able to see who rewatched their stories and create broader audience lists beyond close friends.
One of the key highlights of Instagram Plus is the ability to keep stories visible beyond the standard 24-hour limit, along with options to spotlight a story weekly for higher visibility. Users will also get advanced tools such as viewing story audiences in more detail and exploring profile interactions more effectively.
Enhanced Privacy and Viewing Options
Under Instagram Plus, users will gain additional privacy and flexibility features, including options to view stories without appearing in the viewer list and posting content to profiles without automatically sharing it on followers’ feeds. These tools are aimed at providing more control over content visibility and engagement.
The Instagram plan also introduces advanced audience management features, allowing users to customize how and when their content is seen.
Customization and Personalization Tools
Apart from story-related features, Instagram Plus offers customization options such as app icon changes, animated reactions like super hearts, and additional profile pinning features. While these enhancements are limited in scope, Meta has indicated that more features may be added in future updates to Instagram Plus.

A similar subscription model is expected for Facebook under the Facebook Plus branding with comparable features.
Pricing and Availability
The Instagram subscription is priced at $3.99 per month (approximately ₹380). However, pricing for India has not yet been officially announced. Meta has clarified that even with Instagram Plus, core services like posting, messaging, and scrolling will remain free for all users.
The rollout of Instagram Plus signals Meta’s gradual move toward a hybrid model combining free services with premium subscription-based features.
