CM Dhami ‘s Diwali meetings with top leaders spark buzz of imminent Uttarakhand cabinet expansion, with five key posts currently vacant.

DEHRADUN:  As CM Dhami held a lengthy series of high-profile meetings this weekend, the joyous occasion of Diwali in Uttarakhand took a decidedly political turn, prompting political experts to conjecture that a long-awaited cabinet enlargement is finally imminent.

Before conferring with current MLAs and organizational leaders, the chief minister met with a number of former chief ministers, dedicating the auspicious day to courtesy calls that carried substantial political weight. On Sunday, the rush of activity started.

Former CM Tirath Singh Rawat was the first person CM Dhami visited. After that, he went to see former chief minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri to find out how he was doing. The encounter that was most widely followed, though, was when Dhami met former chief minister Harish Rawat at his home. An observer pointed out that “CM Dhami’s engagement with leaders across the spectrum shows a commitment to unified governance,” underscoring the importance of this specific gathering.

Former Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was still consulted. After meeting with Haridwar MP and former chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Dhami also had a meeting with his political guru, former chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari. Ritu Khanduri, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, received a courtesy call as the day came to an end.

Dhami focused on the existing party and administrative institutions after reaching out to senior officials. Prior to any cabinet changes, he indicated organizational collaboration by meeting with Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal and then with Uttarakhand BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt.

It seems that the long wait for a number of MLAs hoping to become cabinet members is coming to an end. Particularly after Cabinet Minister Prem Chand Aggarwal resigned, a number of important cabinet positions have remained unfilled.

Mahendra Bhatt, the state BJP president, recently told media that a restructuring was imminent. With his statement, “The chief minister is preparing to expand the cabinet soon,” Bhatt ended weeks of suspense.

There are currently five open vacancies in the Uttarakhand cabinet. The fifth position became available following the resignation of previous Finance Minister Prem Chand Aggarwal, while the other four have been vacant for a while. According to an insider, “MLAs have been patiently waiting for these vacancies to be filled,” “Despite numerous internal discussions, concrete results have been held back, but the recent flurry of activity suggests the final list is nearly complete.”

According to the constitution, the chief minister, eight cabinet ministers, and three ministers of state (independent charge) may make up the Uttarakhand council of ministers, for a total of twelve members. Due to the resignation of Prem Chand Aggarwal and the death of Cabinet Minister Chandan Ram Das, two ministerial positions have become vacant under the current Dhami government. These positions, along with the present vacancies, are available for urgent filling.
