Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announces a high-level panel to revive and develop Sanskrit, strengthening language education and research across the state.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday announced the formation of a high-level panel for the revival and development of Sanskrit.

Speaking during the two-day International Sanskrit Conference in Haridwar, Dhami stated that Sanskrit is the origin of many languages worldwide and that all of India’s historic writings, including the Vedas, Puranas, and Upanishads, were in Sanskrit, enriching its ideological legacy.

Ancient institutions like Takshashila, Nalanda, Vikramshila, and Vallabhi used to spread Sanskrit-based knowledge around the world, he added, pointing to the growing interest among European researchers in the literature of the 18th and 19th centuries.

According to the chief minister, “it is our duty to enrich Sanskrit in the holy land of Uttarakhand, which gave birth to the Vedas and the knowledge of sages.” Famous scholars like Charaka, Sushruta, Aryabhatta, Bhaskaracharya, Chanakya, Brahmagupta, and Panini were born in India.

Dhami said Uttarakhand has declared Sanskrit as its second official language and the state government is continuously making efforts to promote Sanskrit instruction in schools.

He stated that the state government has decided to set up Adarsh Sanskrit Gram in each district and is working to expand government support for Sanskrit students’ employment and research opportunities.

Dhami recalled that he had studied Sanskrit up until Class 9, and he could still clearly recall the language’s elegance, grammar, and verses.

In the new education program, great emphasis has been focused on promoting Sanskrit as a modern and practical language, he stated.
