UP raises sugarcane prices for 2025-26: Rs 400/quintal for early variety, Rs 390/quintal for regular, benefiting millions of farmers.

In a historic step aimed at improving the welfare of sugarcane farmers, Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath government has proposed a Rs 30 per quintal increase in sugarcane prices for the 2025-26 crushing season.

The new tariffs have been set at Rs 400 per quintal for early varieties and Rs 390 per quintal for general kinds, bringing smiles to the faces of millions of farmers throughout the state. According to X handle from the CMO office, this price revision will result in an additional payment of Rs 3,000 crore directly to farmers, demonstrating the government’s commitment to their prosperity.

Since taking power in 2017, the Yogi administration has hiked the sugarcane support price four times, in sharp contrast to prior regimes.

The X post of the CMO office also mentioned that, to underline the amount of financial support, the government has disbursed a record Rs 2,90,225 crore to sugarcane farmers over the last eight years. In comparison, previous governments paid out only Rs 1,47,346 crore between 2007 and 2017. This amounts to an excess payment of Rs 1,42,879 crore under the current regime in just over eight years, as opposed to the decade-long tenure of its predecessors.

State Minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary stated, “The Yogi government has announced an increase of Rs 30 per quintal in sugarcane prices for the 2025-26 crushing season. The revised costs are Rs 400 per quintal for the early variety and Rs 390 for the regular variety. Since 2017, we have raised sugarcane prices by Rs 85 per quintal…”

According to the state administration, Uttar Pradesh’s sugar industry has likewise experienced a remarkable resurgence. The state now has 122 functioning sugar mills, ranking second nationwide.

The Yogi government has undone the damage done by previous administrations, which sold 21 mills at throwaway prices. Furthermore, Rs 12,000 crore has been invested in the sector during the last eight years.

Four new sugar mills have been built, six closed units have been reactivated, and capacity at 42 existing mills has been increased. This substantially increased output capacity by the equivalent of eight new big mills.

In addition, two mills now feature compressed biogas (CBG) units. To eliminate middlemen and promote transparency, the ‘Smart Sugarcane Farmer’ method has moved the entire sugarcane slip arrangement online.

Payments are being transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts using the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism.

A centralized web-based “Smart Ganna Kisan” system has been created for online management of sugarcane area mapping, surveys, calendaring, and slip issuing. The Indian government hailed it as a “model system.”

Uttar Pradesh continues to dominate the country in ethanol production, with output increasing from 41 crore to 182 crore litres. The number of distilleries has increased from 61 to 97.

The state’s sugarcane production area has increased dramatically from 20 lakh hectares to 29.51 lakh hectares, solidifying its national leadership position.
