Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann shared key statistics highlighting the success of the Mann government in enhancing groundwater management in Punjab. Through a combination of irrigation expansion, drainage cleaning, and disaster relief funding, the state has witnessed a measurable improvement in groundwater levels, benefiting both farmers and local communities.

Investments in Infrastructure and Relief Works

Over the past four years, the Mann government has invested ₹477 crore from the State Disaster Relief Fund across 195 projects aimed at improving water availability and reducing groundwater depletion. These projects included cleaning and maintaining 3,700 kilometers of drainage canals using 15 newly acquired chain-mounted machines, ensuring optimal flow of water to farmland.

“By restoring canals and providing timely water supply to fields, we have effectively reduced the rate of groundwater extraction in multiple areas,” stated CM Bhagwant Mann.

Significant Rise in Groundwater Levels

Thanks to the concerted irrigation and drainage initiatives, 57% of wells have seen water levels rise by up to 4 meters, signaling a substantial improvement in groundwater management in Punjab. The expanded reach of canal water into fields has lessened dependency on underground water resources, ensuring sustainable water use for agriculture.

Experts note that this success in groundwater management in Punjab reflects a balanced approach combining infrastructure development with environmental preservation. These measures not only secure water for farming but also protect local ecosystems and support long-term agricultural productivity.

Impact on Farmers and Communities

The improved groundwater levels are already benefiting thousands of farmers, reducing the need for excessive borewell usage and lowering irrigation costs. Communities across the state now have more reliable access to water, which strengthens both rural livelihoods and food security.

The Mann government’s initiatives in groundwater management in Punjab demonstrate a sustainable and strategic approach to addressing water challenges. By combining canal irrigation, drainage modernization, and disaster relief funding, the state is setting a benchmark for long-term water resource management, securing Punjab’s agricultural future while supporting economic growth and community welfare.
