Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann celebrated four years of the Mann government by highlighting historic achievements in irrigation development in Punjab. During a press conference, CM Mann shared key statistics that demonstrate the state’s commitment to modernizing agriculture and improving water access for farmers.

Key Achievements in Irrigation Development in Punjab

Over the past four years, the Mann government has undertaken transformative initiatives in irrigation development in Punjab:

  • Water from canals now reaches 58 lakh acres of farmland, covering 78% of the state’s irrigated area.
  • ₹2,000 crore was invested in constructing 13,938 km of new canals, expanding the irrigation network.
  • 18,349 new canals were created to enhance water distribution across agricultural lands.
  • Water from 101 rain-fed rivers and streams was diverted through 545 km of canals to irrigate 2.57 lakh acres of farmland.

These milestones in irrigation development in Punjab represent a major step forward in ensuring water security and supporting sustainable agriculture for the state’s farmers.

Economic and Agricultural Impact

Experts believe that the government’s focus on irrigation development in Punjab will lead to:

  • Increased crop yields and productivity across the state.
  • Reduced dependence on erratic rainfall and groundwater.
  • Better financial stability and livelihood security for farmers.
  • Long-term resilience of Punjab’s agricultural sector against climate challenges.

The expansion of irrigation infrastructure demonstrates the Mann government’s proactive approach to modernizing agriculture while addressing longstanding water challenges in Punjab.
