Sant Seechewal Leads Flood Relief in Punjab’s Mand Villages

Punjab’s Mand region continues to reel under the devastating impact of the Beas river floods, now stretching into their 29th day. Amid this crisis, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has emerged as a beacon of hope for thousands of stranded villagers. Known for his grassroots activism, Seechewal has been working relentlessly in flood-hit Baupur Mand and nearby areas, combining relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts.

Beas River Floods 46 Villages in Mand Region

The Beas river’s altered course has submerged around 15,000 acres of farmland and left 46 villages under water. Homes, fields, and livestock have been destroyed, forcing people to abandon their belongings. Families have been displaced, and many are struggling without food, medicines, or shelter.

“The sight of farmers, who feed the entire nation, now longing for food is unbearable,” said Sant Seechewal. “This is not the time to merely ask for Sarbat da Bhala (welfare of all) but to actually work for it.”

Seechewal’s words reflect the anguish of thousands who remain marooned by the relentless waters. His presence on the ground has not only provided practical relief but also boosted the morale of affected villagers.

Building a Massive Rescue Boat

One of Seechewal’s most remarkable initiatives has been the construction of a large rescue boat. Along with his team, he worked for three days and nights to build a vessel capable of transporting both families and heavy machinery. The boat has saved tractors and equipment worth lakhs, preventing additional financial losses for farmers already devastated by the flood.

By the end of August, nearly 300 animals had been rescued using the boat. Each day, Seechewal and his team spend 10 hours ferrying essentials — including food, clean water, and medicines — to stranded families. His decision to cancel a scheduled trip to England underscored his commitment. “I cannot leave my people in such times,” he said.

Living Among Villagers, Leading Rescue Efforts

While most politicians made brief visits to survey the damage, Seechewal has remained in the Mand region for over three weeks. From 8:30 a.m. until evening, he joins his team on rescue missions, personally carrying children, supporting elderly villagers, and helping families salvage what little they can.

His tireless work has drawn praise from locals. Farmer Nirmal Singh, looking at his destroyed paddy crop, said: “When Baba Ji arrived every morning in his boat, we felt we were not alone.” Such testimonies reflect the deep trust and gratitude villagers feel toward him.

Political Leaders Visit, But Seechewal Stays

Seechewal’s efforts have also prompted other leaders to visit the flood-hit areas. Former cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh toured the region on August 18. Punjab’s Water Resources Minister arrived on August 20, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann visited on August 22.

However, unlike these short visits, Seechewal has continued to live among the flood victims. His ongoing presence has become a source of strength for the community, reinforcing the perception that he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people.

Community United Against the Flood

Beyond individual efforts, the crisis has brought communities together. Local families have been moved to safer places, while volunteers support distribution of essentials. The sense of solidarity has been vital in ensuring survival amid unprecedented devastation.

Still, the crisis is far from over. The fury of the Beas continues, and the river’s shifting course threatens to swallow more homes. Farmers face mounting uncertainty about their livelihoods, and relief operations remain critical in the days ahead.

For many, Sant Seechewal’s commitment is a reminder of what true leadership looks like in times of disaster. His dedication has lightened not only material burdens but also the emotional weight carried by flood-hit families.
