Punjab Taxation Department detains 141 vehicles in statewide GST enforcement drive targeting iron and steel sector, collecting ₹14.84 crore penalties.
The Punjab Taxation Department carried out a special statewide enforcement campaign on January 28, mobilizing all wings of the State Intelligence and Preventive Units (SIPUs). The operation underscores the Department’s commitment to strict GST compliance and protecting government revenue.
Punjab Excise Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated that 141 vehicles were detained for detailed verification across the state, with a large number intercepted in Mandi Gobindgarh and Ludhiana, key centers of the iron and steel trade. Initial checks suggest that most vehicles were transporting iron and steel goods, potentially involved in tax evasion through invoice-less movements, misuse of GST provisions, and irregular e-way bills.
Cheema explained that the campaign builds on the January 2026 enforcement drive targeting the high-risk iron and steel sector, based on credible intelligence. Investigations indicated large-scale evasion involving bogus firms, fake invoices, and manipulation of e-way bills. SIPUs were therefore instructed to intensify checks on iron scrap, finished iron and steel goods, and other high-risk commodities to ensure uniform enforcement across the state.

According to the Minister, January’s sustained operations resulted in 793 vehicles being detained, including 538 carrying iron scrap and finished iron/steel goods, with the remainder transporting other commodities. These efforts led to 14.84 crore rupees in penalties across 667 cases, while 187 cases remain under verification with additional recoveries expected.
Cheema emphasized that the Department’s proactive, intelligence-led approach strengthens GST compliance, discourages evasion, and creates a level playing field for honest taxpayers. He added that targeted drives will continue to protect revenue, promote voluntary compliance, and maintain transparency in the GST regime.
