Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh Flags Off 20 New Ambulances in Amritsar
In a significant move to enhance emergency medical services and strengthen flood response capabilities, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh inaugurated 20 new ambulances at the Government Medical College in Amritsar on September 1, 2025.
This initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and ensure timely medical assistance during emergencies.
Strengthening Emergency Medical Services
The newly inducted ambulances are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, including oxygen support, life-saving drugs, and GPS-enabled tracking systems. These features aim to ensure rapid response times, with ambulances reaching patients within 15 minutes in urban areas and 20 minutes in rural regions.
Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized that the addition of these ambulances will significantly bolster the state’s emergency medical services, enabling healthcare providers to respond more effectively to critical situations.
Enhancing Flood Response Capabilities
The deployment of these ambulances comes at a crucial time, as Punjab grapples with the aftermath of severe flooding in several districts. To address the health challenges posed by the floods, the state has mobilized a comprehensive healthcare response.
A total of 424 ambulances are now operational across the affected districts, comprising 170 from the health department and 254 supported by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Additionally, the health department has deployed 818 Rapid Response and Mobile Medical Teams to conduct daily medical camps in affected villages and shelter homes.
Collaborative Efforts for Effective Healthcare Delivery
The successful implementation of this initiative is a result of collaborative efforts between the Punjab Health Department, the IMA, nursing colleges, private hospitals, and government and private medical colleges. These stakeholders have come together to bolster the state’s healthcare infrastructure and ensure that essential medical services reach those in need.
Dr. Balbir Singh acknowledged the invaluable support of these organizations and reiterated the government’s commitment to providing uninterrupted healthcare services during the ongoing crisis.
Ongoing Healthcare Initiatives
Beyond the deployment of ambulances, the Punjab government is undertaking several measures to address health concerns arising from the floods.
These include the distribution of chlorine tablets to combat water-borne diseases, extensive spraying and fogging operations to prevent vector-borne diseases, and the establishment of medical camps to provide immediate care to affected populations.
The health department is also focusing on the prevention of diseases such as malaria, dengue, and typhoid through community engagement and awareness programs.
