The sustained initiatives of the Punjab Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to promote wildlife conservation and environmental awareness are showing encouraging results. Visitor numbers at Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, Chhatbir, have witnessed a notable increase, reflecting growing public interest in wildlife preservation.

Sharing the figures, Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak stated that the zoo recorded a total of 80,508 visitors during the first two months of the year. Of these, 48,719 people visited in January, while 31,789 visitors came in February to explore the wide range of birds and animals housed in the well-maintained and peaceful environment of the zoo.

Kataruchak Credits Wildlife Awareness Drive and Conservation Projects for Rise in Chhatbir Zoo Visitors

Kataruchak attributed the rising footfall to the government’s continued efforts to raise awareness about wildlife protection. He said that several significant conservation-driven projects have been introduced at Chhatbir Zoo to enhance both protection measures and visitor experience.

Among the key attractions is the country’s largest and longest walk-in aviary, which has emerged as a major draw for visitors. In addition, an ultra-modern dinosaur park has been developed to provide an engaging educational and recreational experience.

The minister also highlighted infrastructure improvements at the zoo. In the 1,200-metre wildlife safari zone, the boundary wall has been reinforced, and a 260 kV solar power plant has been installed to promote the use of renewable energy. A dedicated critical care unit has been set up in the lion safari area to ensure specialized medical treatment for carnivorous animals. Furthermore, an open-air Zoo Education Plaza has been created to facilitate learning, especially for school students.

Outlining broader conservation efforts across the state, Kataruchak noted that the Indus River Dolphin has been declared Punjab’s State Aquatic Animal. Additionally, 13 wildlife sanctuaries have been designated as plastic-free zones. He further stated that five wetlands—Harike, Ropar, Kanjhli, Keshopur, and Nangal—have been selected among 100 wetlands identified by the Union Government for priority development.
