Floods Leave Punjab Villages in Crisis

Heavy floods have submerged large parts of Punjab, displacing families and destroying fertile fields. On Tuesday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia visited Sultanpur Lodhi, one of the worst-affected regions, to review the ongoing relief and rescue efforts.

Sisodia, accompanied by AAP MP Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, described the destruction as “terrifying.” Entire homes remain underwater, while livestock are trapped. “It is difficult to gauge that just 4–5 feet below this water, Punjab’s lush fields are buried,” he said.

The floods have not only destroyed farmlands but also created challenges for food supply, animal care, and transportation. Despite these difficulties, both government agencies and community volunteers are working round the clock.

AAP’s Relief Efforts on the Ground

According to Sisodia, AAP workers and Punjab government officials have been stationed in the flood-hit region for over three weeks. He noted that evacuation missions have been carried out to move vulnerable residents to safety.

“For those who are still staying in their homes, food, fodder for animals, and other necessities are being delivered daily,” Sisodia said in his statement on social media.

His visit highlighted the role of AAP leaders, MLAs, and MPs who continue to assist in relief distribution. The Punjab administration has also mobilized local authorities, deploying boats, tractors, and relief camps to provide temporary shelter.

Community Support and Government Response

Flood-affected residents in Sultanpur Lodhi acknowledged the support but expressed fear about long-term recovery. Standing water has increased health risks, while submerged fields raise concerns of crop loss for the kharif season.

Local AAP MP Seechewal urged continued cooperation between state agencies and citizens. “This is the same area where the flood first hit, and the government is ensuring no family is left behind,” he said.

The Punjab government has promised financial relief packages and rehabilitation assistance once water levels recede. Additionally, food packets, drinking water, and medical teams have been dispatched to ensure immediate needs are met.

Long-Term Challenges Ahead

While relief work is ongoing, experts warn that Punjab must improve flood preparedness. Weak embankments, clogged drains, and erratic monsoons continue to worsen the crisis every year.

Sisodia emphasized that the AAP government remains committed to rebuilding lives. “It was satisfying to see every worker, MLA, MP, and the entire government engaged in human service with dedication,” he said.

Residents, however, hope that future planning will focus on strengthening flood defenses, restoring farmland productivity, and providing sustainable support for families who have lost their livelihoods.
