Punjab Makes Major Strides in Fish Farming Sector
- Over 2 Lakh Metric Tons of Fish Produced Annually; 43,683 Acres Under Aquaculture, Says Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian
Chandigarh, July 11:
Marking National Fish Farmers Day, Punjab’s Cabinet Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, highlighted the state’s remarkable achievements in the fish farming sector. He announced that Punjab is producing over 2 lakh metric tons of fish annually, reflecting a strong and consistent growth in inland aquaculture.
Addressing the media on the occasion, the Minister stated that the fisheries sector in Punjab is flourishing, thanks to increased awareness, supportive government policies, and the efficient use of natural water resources.
“Punjab’s fish farming landscape is expanding rapidly. We are utilizing natural water bodies, private ponds, and village (panchayati) ponds to their full potential,” said Khudian.
Acreage Under Fish and Shrimp Farming Sees Significant Rise
Sharing detailed statistics, the Minister informed that 43,683 acres of land in Punjab are currently dedicated to fish farming, while an additional 985 acres have been brought under shrimp farming. This expansion is a clear indicator of the growing interest among farmers in aquaculture, which is emerging as a profitable and sustainable livelihood option.
He noted that these developments are not only contributing to increased fish production but are also playing a key role in diversifying the rural economy and creating employment opportunities, especially in water-rich districts of the state.
Government Support and Initiatives
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting scientific fish farming practices, providing technical training, and offering financial incentives to farmers willing to adopt aquaculture. He emphasized that aquaculture is being viewed as an essential component of sustainable agriculture, capable of boosting rural incomes while maintaining ecological balance.
“We are constantly working to enhance infrastructure, provide high-quality fish seed, ensure feed supply, and improve market linkages for fish farmers across Punjab,” Khudian added.
A Promising Future for Aquaculture in Punjab
With a favorable geographical layout and an increasing number of farmers turning to fish and shrimp farming, Punjab is rapidly becoming a hub for inland aquaculture in India. The state’s proactive approach, coupled with rising awareness among the farming community, is paving the way for a sustainable and resilient fisheries sector.
As the demand for quality fish continues to grow both domestically and internationally, Punjab’s aquaculture efforts are expected to contribute significantly to the state’s economy and national food security in the coming years.
