RML Hospital to begin free newborn Testing for rare genetic disorders by 2026, reducing reliance on costly private tests with new biochemistry facility.

Beginning in early 2026, the biochemistry department is putting up state-of-the-art equipment to provide free newborn testing for over six genetic illnesses.

These tests now cost between Rs 1,000 and Rs 50,000 in private facilities, which is frequently equivalent to a whole month’s wages for a typical family. A proposal for the necessary equipment has already been forwarded to the Ministry of Family Welfare and Health. Additionally, the hospital will have specialized physicians on staff to treat patients, making it a one-stop shop for treating such ailments.

Diseases to be screened at RML Hospital include:

• A hormonal condition known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia can result in an imbalance of salt and water, early puberty, or an adrenal crisis. RML will give tests for free; privately, they cost between Rs 8,000 and Rs 50,000.
• Congenital hypothyroidism: This condition, which is brought on by an underactive thyroid gland, can impair development and result in intellectual impairment. Private lab testing costs between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.
• A uncommon metabolic condition called galactosemia causes the body to be unable to digest galactose, which damages the liver and makes it difficult for babies to eat. Rs 700–5,000 is the price range for private testing.
• Skin rashes, hair loss, and neurological problems can result from a biotinidase deficiency, which stops the recycling of vitamin B7. Newborn screening identifies it; testing costs between Rs 1,900 and Rs 3,800.
• A disorder known as G6PD Deficiency causes hemolytic anemia by rapidly breaking down red blood cells. The private sector charges Rs 500–1,500 for tests.

The proposal for the purchase of machines has been sent, according to Professor Dr. Parul Goyal of the biochemistry department. He also mentioned that the effort will provide free testing and treatment for uncommon genetic diseases to a significant number of patients.

Experts point out that having such a center will guarantee prompt discovery and treatment, something that many kids are now unable to access since private testing is so expensive.
