Delhi: Arvind died on the spot due to toxic gas exposure; three others hospitalized in critical condition after inhaling poisonous fumes.

Delhi, New Delhi: Four sanitation workers were exposed to poisonous gas while cleaning a sewer close to an apartment complex in Ashok Vihar, Delhi, which resulted in a serious accident. During the surgery, the dangerous gas overpowered the workers, and one of them, 40-year-old Arvind, died from the toxic fumes.

Rescue operations and casualties

After breathing in the poisonous gas, the other three employees were sent to the hospital in severe condition, but Arvind died instantly from the gas exposure. The tragedy sent shockwaves across the local community over worker safety during such hazardous tasks, notwithstanding the fast response of emergency personnel.

Highlighted safety risks

This terrible incident serves as a reminder of the risks sanitation workers confront when performing sewer repair, particularly in small areas where hazardous gases can build up in the absence of proper ventilation or safety measures.

“Based on preliminary findings, a case has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence), 289 (act rashly or negligently with machinery endangering human life) and 337 (forging document or electronic record), and the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013,” said the officer.
