AAP Targets CM Over Husband’s Role
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, accusing her of allowing her husband, Manish Gupta, to actively participate in government affairs.
The controversy erupted after photos surfaced from an official meeting in which Manish Gupta was seated beside the Chief Minister. AAP compared the administration to the fictional “Phulera Panchayat” from the popular web series Panchayat, where the sarpanch’s husband exerts real power.
Posting the photo on X (formerly Twitter), AAP questioned whether the capital was now being run like a village council. “Is Phulera’s Panchayat Government running in Delhi?” the party asked, highlighting how the CM’s husband appeared to be involved in state matters without holding any elected office.
AAP Calls It a ‘Mockery of Democracy’
AAP Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj escalated the attack, alleging that this was not an isolated instance. He claimed that Manish Gupta had been routinely present at official meetings, interacting with officers, and even joining inspection visits.
“Delhi Government has turned into Phulera Panchayat. Just like in the series, where the woman sarpanch’s husband acted as the real head, the CM’s husband is now seen in official meetings. This is completely unconstitutional. In the capital of India, democracy and constitutional norms are being mocked in this manner,” Bharadwaj wrote on X.
The AAP leader also accused the BJP of double standards. “The BJP spares no chance to criticize the Congress for dynasty politics. Yet, when its own Chief Minister allows her husband to sit in meetings, it raises serious questions. If this is not dynasty politics, then what is it?”
BJP Faces Dynasty Politics Charge
AAP’s attack adds a new dimension to the ongoing political war of words between the two rivals. The party said that the presence of Manish Gupta in official discussions symbolized the BJP’s reliance on family ties over institutional accountability.
“The Chief Minister leads the world’s largest political party in the capital. Does she not have even one trusted worker to assist her? Why is her husband being given a role in the official system?” Bharadwaj asked.
AAP further pointed out that the photographs were not leaked but publicly shared by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on X and on Rekha Gupta’s official Instagram account. This, the party claimed, was proof that the government did not see anything wrong in involving family members in governance.
Opposition Smells Opportunity
Political observers say AAP’s latest move is an attempt to corner the BJP on a moral high ground. Dynasty politics has long been a charge that the BJP has used against the Congress, but AAP’s allegations now turn that accusation back on the ruling party.
The comparison with Phulera Panchayat has also struck a chord on social media, where the series is widely recognized. Memes and hashtags related to “Phulera Government” began trending on Sunday evening, amplifying AAP’s campaign.
So far, the BJP has not issued an official statement defending Rekha Gupta or clarifying her husband’s role. Analysts suggest that the party may either dismiss the allegations as political theatrics or frame Manish Gupta’s presence as an informal support role rather than interference in governance.
Governance Versus Perception
The controversy comes at a sensitive time for Delhi politics. With civic issues, flood management, and infrastructure challenges dominating headlines, critics argue that any perception of nepotism weakens public confidence in governance.
Experts also warn that if the BJP does not address the issue quickly, it may allow AAP to control the narrative. “Perception is as important as governance. Even if Manish Gupta’s role is informal, optics matter. The BJP will have to explain why the Chief Minister’s husband is in government meetings,” said a political analyst.
For now, the opposition seems determined to keep the issue alive. AAP leaders hinted at releasing more photographs and details of Manish Gupta’s alleged involvement in government activities in the coming days.
