Survivor Alleges Assault in Regent Park
KOLKATA : A shocking case of sexual assault has once again jolted Kolkata, a city often described as one of the safest for women in India. A 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by two of her acquaintances on her birthday in the Regent Park area of south Kolkata, police confirmed on Sunday.
The accused were identified as Chandan Malik and a man known as Deep, who is reportedly a government employee. According to police sources, the survivor from Haridevpur stated that Chandan invited her to Deep’s house on the pretext of celebrating her birthday on Friday.
At the flat, the trio had a meal. However, when the woman wanted to return home, the accused allegedly stopped her. “They locked the door and gang-raped her,” a police official said.
The survivor managed to escape around 10:30 am on Saturday. She returned home and informed her family, who then helped her file a complaint. Police registered an FIR under relevant sections, and a search has been launched for the accused, both of whom are currently absconding.
Victim Knew Accused Through Puja Committee
In her complaint, the survivor said she had met Chandan several months ago. He introduced himself as the head of a prominent Durga Puja committee in south Kolkata. Through him, she became acquainted with Deep, and the three remained in contact.
The accused reportedly promised to involve her in the puja committee. Police are investigating whether this promise was a pretext to lure her into their circle.
Officers said initial findings suggest the assault was pre-planned, as the accused locked the premises and prevented the woman from leaving. Authorities are now verifying the survivor’s statements and cross-checking details with local residents and CCTV footage.
Recent Crimes Raise Safety Concerns
The incident has added to growing concerns about women’s safety in Kolkata. Despite being ranked the safest metro for women in the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, several disturbing cases have emerged in recent months.
On June 25, a law student was allegedly raped on the South Calcutta Law College campus. The prime accused, alumnus Monojit Mishra, who once headed the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit of the college, was arrested soon after. The TMCP later clarified that it had no association with Mishra for two years.
Last year, the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital triggered nationwide protests. The accused, Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer, was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year.
These incidents, activists say, highlight the growing gap between official safety data and the lived reality of women in Kolkata.

Police have launched a search to trace Malik and Deep, who went missing after the alleged assault. Officials said dedicated teams are working to track their movements and secure their arrest.
