RTI reveals 37 Delhi STPs failing standards; AAP, BJP clash over Yamuna pollution, blame previous governments, and dispute sewage treatment claims.

After the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) claimed in an RTI response that the sewage treatment plants (STPs) were “not meeting required standards,” the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed over the STPs’ operation on Friday.

As the RTI response reveals that “untreated sewage continues to flow” straight into the river, AAP Delhi President Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that the BJP government’s assertions that the Yamuna had been cleaned had been disproved.

While they cleaned the Yamuna in eight months, they [BJP leaders] claimed that [previous Chief Minister] Arvind Kejriwal could not do so in ten years. The entire world already knows the truth about their phony clean Yamuna show. The information gleaned through RTI, however, is really startling because it shows that all 37 STPs failed the inspection, he said.

Praveen Shankar Kapoor, a Delhi BJP spokesperson, retorted that the prior AAP government, not the eight-month-old BJP government, is to blame for any flaws in the operation of the 37 STPs.

If Saurabh Bharadwaj is brave enough, he ought to address the recent report from the Centre for Science and Environment, which claimed that the previous AAP government failed to maintain 37 STPs and clean the Yamuna despite spending ₹6,856 crore between 2015 and 2022 on the project.

The fact that Mr. Bharadwaj has “not recovered from election defeat” and is still making “baseless statements every day,” according to Mr. Kapoor, is astonishing.
