The BJP has appointed Sanjay Saraogi as Bihar state president weeks after the NDA’s big Assembly election win. Know his political journey.
Sanjay Saraogi was named head of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Bihar faction. Saraogi was appointed about a month after the BJP-led NDA secured an overwhelming majority in the Bihar Assembly elections.
“Bharatiya Janata Party national president Jagat Prakash Nadda has appointed Sanjay Saraogi as the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar with immediate effect,” announced Arun Singh, national general secretary of the BJP.
Saraogi takes over as head of the Bihar BJP, succeeding Dilip Jaiswal, who was nominated to the position less than two years ago.
Sanjay Saraogi: Who is he?
Saraogi, 57, is a former cabinet minister in the Bihar government and an MLA from the Darbhanga constituency.
Jaiswal was probably removed in accordance with the BJP’s declared “one person, one post” policy. He left the Nitish Kumar administration last year after Samrat Choudhary, the deputy chief minister, was replaced as the state BJP president.
In February of this year, Saraogi was appointed to the state government and given the important portfolio of land reform and revenue.
After beginning his political career as a student activist with the ABVP, Saraogi became an active member of the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM). In 2001, he was named the BJP’s Darbhanga municipal unit president.

Since making his electoral debut in the Darbhanga assembly elections in 2005, he has always won the seat.
He frequently takes a tough stance on issues and is a member of the State Executive Committee as well as the convenor of the Bihar State BJP Cow Protection Cell.
A well-known Vaishya representative of the party, Sanjay Saraogi has been an MLA since February 2005 and is thought to retain a firm grip on the Darbhanga urban seat. He held important land and revenue portfolios while serving as a minister in the previous NDA government. It is believed that his appointment as state president is crucial for preserving social harmony and for electoral calculations.
