Patna Vigilance Raids Expose Illegal Assets
Patna witnessed a major vigilance crackdown on Thursday as the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) conducted raids against a senior education department officer. The regional deputy director, Virendra Narayan, is under investigation for allegedly holding assets worth over Rs 3.76 crore, far beyond his known income.
Raids were carried out simultaneously at Narayan’s residences and offices in Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Purnia. According to officials, the searches revealed multiple properties, high-value jewellery, and significant bank deposits.
Properties, Bank Deposits, and Jewellery Seized
The vigilance team discovered that Narayan also owned a luxury flat in Sector 118, Noida. Property documents for several plots in Jokihat and Sadar areas of Purnia were recovered in the name of his wife, Sneha Nidhi.
Investigators also found details of her bank accounts linked to large transactions. Preliminary findings suggest that Narayan invested over Rs 50 lakh in fixed deposits.
Additionally, jewellery worth several crores was seized during the operation. Officials said the exact valuation of the ornaments is currently underway.
Pattern of Disproportionate Assets
Officials allege that Narayan acquired these assets through means not consistent with his official salary and allowances. Vigilance sources confirmed that the officer is facing charges of amassing disproportionate assets, which carry severe legal consequences under Bihar’s anti-corruption laws.
The SVU added that financial documents recovered during the raids will undergo detailed scrutiny. Moreover, records of property purchases, bank statements, and investment papers are expected to strengthen the case against Narayan.
Wider Crackdown on Corruption in Bihar
This raid comes amid the Bihar government’s larger push to address corruption in public offices. Vigilance raids have intensified in recent months, targeting officials across departments accused of misusing their positions for personal gain.
Authorities stated that the investigation into Narayan is ongoing, and further raids or seizures cannot be ruled out. If proven guilty, the officer may face suspension, confiscation of assets, and legal proceedings.
The SVU reaffirmed its commitment to tackling corruption, stating, “No officer is above the law, and strict action will follow in every case of financial irregularity.”
Public Reaction and Next Steps
The case has stirred public debate in Bihar, especially in the education sector, where corruption allegations often hinder reforms. Many citizens expressed frustration, noting that such incidents erode trust in governance.
Officials confirmed that after valuation and verification, a chargesheet may be filed against Narayan under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The vigilance operation is being closely followed, as it may set the tone for similar actions against other officials suspected of corruption.
