Taking caste equations into full account, CM Nitish Kumar’s JDU has finalized its candidate list for the Bihar elections.
So far, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s party, Janta Dal United (JDU), has put forward 101 candidates for the 2019 Assembly elections. A close look at the list of candidates shows that JDU has focused on balancing the caste balance while sticking to the tried-and-true Luv-Kush equation.
The party has offered the most tickets, 37, to candidates from the Other Backward Class (OBC). Nitish Kumar has also put his faith in the Luv-Kush equation by providing it 25 tickets.
The JDU’s caste system for giving out tickets
The Nitish Kumar-led party has put up 22 candidates each from the Extremely Backward Class and the General Category, in addition to granting 37 tickets to OBCs.
JDU has given 15 candidates from the Scheduled Castes seats. There are four candidates from the minority community, including one from the Scheduled Tribes.
There are 101 candidates for the JDU, and 13 of them are women.
The Luv-Kush mix
The Luv-Kush equation is a political term that means an alliance between the Koeri (Kushwaha) and Kurmi populations. This is a very important vote bank for Nitish’s JDU. It is like RJD’s MY (Muslim-Yadav) group.
These groups can change the results of polls in approximately 50 to 60 constituencies when they work together. The Luv-Kush has awarded 13 tickets to candidates from the Kushwaha community and 12 seats to candidates from the Kurmi group.
Distribution by caste
The list has eight people from the Yadav and Dhanuk communities, three from the Mallah communities, two from the Gangota, Kaamat, Chandravanshi, Teli, and Kalwar castes, and one from the Halwai, Kanu, Agrahari, Sudhi, and Goswami castes.
SC: Five of the 15 people from the Scheduled Castes who have been handed tickets are Musahar-Manjhi, five are Ravidas, two are Pasi, and one each is Paswan, Sardar-Bansphor, Kharwar, and Dhobi.
