The evening in London was truly memorable as the luminaries of songwriting and musical narration graced the stage at the esteemed Ivor Novello Awards 2025. The event honored a diverse array of artists, from iconic Irish rock bands to contemporary pop innovators, celebrating those whose lyrics and tunes persist in influencing the soundtrack of our existence.

A Night of Legends and Luminaries

At the forefront of the accolades was the legendary Irish band U2, which received the Ivors Academy Fellowship — the most prestigious award granted by the UK-based organization. With this honor, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. entered the esteemed company of Paul McCartney, Sting, Kate Bush, and Bruce Springsteen — and significantly became the first Irish songwriters in history to attain this recognition.

“When we convened in Larry Mullen’s kitchen in 1976, this was beyond our imagination,” Adam Clayton expressed during a heartfelt address. “We possessed only the most fundamental skills, yet we were convinced that our music could lead us to any destination.” And indeed, it did. Years later, U2’s odyssey still strikes a chord with audiences of all ages.

Charli XCX Crowned Songwriter of the Year

Pop innovator Charli XCX walked away with the coveted Songwriter of the Year with Amazon Music award, following the cultural wave stirred by her latest album, Brat. Bold, experimental, and utterly raw, Brat redefined what modern pop can sound like — and it earned Charli a standing ovation at the Ivors.

Though Brat was a fan-favourite, the Album of the Year award went to Berwyn for Who Am I, a record praised by the judges for its “vivid storytelling that transcends generations, race and social differences.” Berwyn’s deeply personal lyrics offered a voice to the often unheard and unseen — a sentiment that struck a powerful chord with audiences and critics alike.

Celebrating Craft, Culture, and Connection

The awards proceeded with Sans Soucis receiving the accolade for Best Contemporary Song for “Circumnavigating Georgia”, whereas Orla Gartland’s deeply emotive “Mine” was honored with the title of Best Song Musically and Lyrically. The emerging viral star Myles Smith secured the Most Performed Work award for his moving hit “Stargazing.”

Pop icon Robbie Williams, known for classics like “Angels” and “Let Me Entertain You”, was honoured with the Music Icon Award — a fitting tribute to a career that has defined and redefined British pop across decades. Reflecting on his creative journey, Williams told Reuters, “I’m just compelled to keep searching for the perfect pop tune… to try and get whatever’s inside out.”

Rising Stars and Global Influences

The ceremony also tipped its hat to the future of music, awarding Lola Young the Rising Star Award. Her fearless storytelling and soulful voice signal a promising new chapter in UK songwriting.

Meanwhile, Brandon Flowers, frontman of The Killers, took home the Special International Award. Known for blending poetic depth with stadium-sized hooks, Flowers was celebrated as “one of the most influential songwriters of his generation.”

A Tradition of Honouring the Art of Song

Initially established in 1956 and named in honor of the renowned Welsh composer Ivor Novello, the Ivors have emerged as a symbol of acknowledgment for authentic musical artistry in a time frequently influenced by algorithms and trends.

In 2025, as in years past, the Ivors reminded us that while fame may fade and charts may change, the power of a well-told story — set to music — remains timeless.
