Early Warning Signs of Oral Cancer Symptoms Experts Say Should Not Be Ignored

Experts say oral cancer symptoms like mouth ulcers, white or red patches, and swelling should be checked early for better treatment outcomes

Tobacco consumption continues to cause millions of deaths worldwide every year, and experts warn that it is strongly linked to oral cancer symptoms that are often ignored in early stages. Despite growing awareness, a large number of people still use smoking and tobacco-based products, increasing their risk of serious health conditions.

Experts say that oral cancer symptoms are not limited to the lungs or heart-related issues, but can also appear in the mouth as early warning signs of a dangerous disease.

Rising Oral Cancer Cases and Lack of Awareness

Dr. Amit Chakraborty told TOI that oral cancer cases are increasing rapidly in the country, but awareness about oral cancer symptoms remains very low. Many people ignore mouth ulcers, gum bleeding, or other oral issues, assuming they are minor problems.

However, if a mouth ulcer does not heal within two weeks, it should not be ignored. Such signs may be linked to oral cancer symptoms, and delaying medical attention can worsen the condition.

Key Warning Signs of Oral Cancer

According to experts, oral cancer symptoms include more than just persistent mouth ulcers. White or red patches inside the mouth, pain while chewing, swelling or lumps, loose teeth, and difficulty in speaking or swallowing are all warning signs.

Other important cancer symptoms include persistent bad breath and numbness in parts of the mouth. These symptoms are more commonly seen in individuals who use tobacco regularly.

Are All Mouth Ulcers Cancerous?

Dr clarified that not every mouth ulcer is cancerous. Normal ulcers usually heal within three to four days without serious discomfort. However, if a sore persists, grows, bleeds easily, or causes difficulty in eating and speaking, it should be examined immediately.

Ignoring such oral cancer symptoms, especially when accompanied by white or red patches, can lead to delayed diagnosis and complications.

Rising Cases Among Younger Population

Earlier, oral cancer was mostly seen in people aged 50–75 years. However, recent trends show a rise in oral cancer symptoms among younger individuals aged 25–45 years, especially those who smoke, vape, or chew tobacco.

Experts believe that smoking, tobacco chewing, vaping, alcohol consumption, and poor oral hygiene are major contributors to increasing oral cancer symptoms in younger populations.

Early Detection Improves Survival Rate

Doctors emphasize that early detection of oral cancer symptoms can significantly improve treatment outcomes. According to Dr. Chakraborty, patients diagnosed in early stages have a survival rate of 80–90 percent.

Timely medical consultation and awareness of oral cancer symptoms can therefore play a crucial role in saving lives and ensuring better recovery outcomes.
