The Padma Purana states that a single holy bath performed during the month of Magh makes Lord Vishnu happier than fasting, charity, or penance. During this hallowed time, Prayagraj also hosts the renowned Magh Mela.

The Magh month will start on January 4, 2026, and end on February 1, 2026. For benevolent deeds (daan) and holy bathing (snan), the month is regarded as extremely auspicious. The Moon stays in the Magha Nakshatra on this month’s full moon day, thus the name “Magh.” According to religious beliefs, taking a holy plunge in holy rivers or places of pilgrimage during Magh aids in the atonement of sins.

According to the Mahabharata’s Anushasana Parva, devotees who fervently bathe in the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj or in other hallowed rivers like the Godavari and Kaveri are cleansed of all sins. One of the most effective spiritual rituals for obtaining purity and divine blessings during Magh is bathing.
