The West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 have officially begun, with Phase 1 voting underway today across 152 constituencies in 16 districts. This election cycle marks a significant departure from the traditional multi-phase polling pattern, as the state conducts elections in a streamlined two-phase format covering all 294 seats.

Polling for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 is being held on April 23 for the first phase, while the second phase is scheduled for April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 4, when the political future of the state will be decided.

West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 See Major Shift from Multi-Phase to Two-Phase Polling Format

One of the most notable aspects of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 is the shift from multi-phase polling. In recent years, the state has witnessed elections conducted in several stages, including the eight-phase polling seen in 2021. This time, authorities have opted for a compressed schedule, citing improved coordination and enhanced security arrangements.

Security preparedness has also been strengthened for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026. Central forces were deployed nearly two weeks in advance, unlike previous elections where deployment followed the announcement of poll dates. This proactive step is aimed at ensuring a peaceful and smooth voting process across sensitive regions.

With tighter scheduling and robust security measures in place, the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 are expected to be among the most efficiently conducted elections in the state’s recent history. As polling progresses, attention will now turn to May 4, when the results will shape the political direction of West Bengal.
