Congress Warns Cabinet Exit if Vijay TVK Rejects Rahul Gandhi 2029 PM Candidate

Tensions rise in Tamil Nadu as Congress conditions its alliance support on leadership endorsement for the next general elections

by P D

The ruling alliance in Tamil Nadu faces severe political friction. The Indian National Congress issued a direct warning to its coalition partner, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). State Tourism Minister S Rajesh Kumar confirmed Congress ministers will resign from the cabinet. This move occurs if TVK refuses to back the Rahul Gandhi 2029 PM candidate proposal.

The bold declaration highlights deep internal differences regarding national ambitions. While Congress focuses on central leadership, TVK continues to project Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay for higher national roles.

Political Entity Key Leadership Current Legislative Standing Stance on 2029 Leadership
TVK C. Joseph Vijay 108 Assembly Seats Projects Vijay as national contender
Congress S. Rajesh Kumar / P. Viswanathan 5 Assembly Seats Backs Rahul Gandhi exclusively
Opposition (DMK) M.K. Stalin 59 Assembly Seats Monitoring coalition instability

Ultimatum Issued at Kanyakumari Party Event

Minister S Rajesh Kumar delivered the warning during an official party gathering in Kanyakumari. He spoke at the oath-taking ceremony for George Robinson, the new Kanyakumari West District Congress Committee President. The minister stated clearly that party ideology comes before power.

He emphasized that Rahul Gandhi remains the sole choice to lead the nation in 2029. Moreover, Higher Education Minister P Viswanathan echoed similar views at Trichy airport. Both leaders made it clear that Congress cadres will not compromise on national leadership.

Mathematical Reality of the Coalition Government

The political math makes this warning particularly significant. TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. However, the party won 108 seats, falling short of the 118-seat majority mark.

To form the government, TVK relied on five Congress lawmakers and smaller allies. In return, Congress secured two cabinet posts. This marked its return to state governance for the first time since 1967. Consequently, a Congress exit would strip the government of its direct majority, forcing Vijay to seek alternative support.

Clash Over National Ambitions and Regional Pride

The rift started when TVK leaders began promoting Chief Minister Vijay for national roles. Public Works Department Minister Aadhav Arjuna sparked debate by stating a Prime Minister should come from Tamil Nadu. Other TVK ministers quickly supported this view.

Furthermore, recent opinion polls ranked Vijay third among preferred prime ministerial figures, behind Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi. TVK framed this survey as proof of Vijay’s growing national popularity. However, Congress leaders dismissed these pushes as early hype driven by fan-club attitudes.

Strategic Impact on the Rahul Gandhi 2029 PM Candidate Campaign

The demand to back the Rahul Gandhi 2029 PM candidate line reflects national strategy. Congress aims to consolidate opposition support early behind its leader. Therefore, the party refuses to allow regional allies to create competing narratives.

TNCC President Manickam Tagore noted that ally discipline remains vital for long-term alliance survival. Additionally, Congress strategists believe accepting regional alternatives dilutes the opposition’s core focus against the ruling central government.

Potential Futures for the Tamil Nadu Administration

The current dispute leaves Chief Minister Vijay with difficult choices. TVK must decide whether to accept Congress terms or risk government instability. Accepting the condition might alienate supporters who want a Tamil leader at the center. Conversely, losing Congress support endangers the coalition’s legislative majority.

As the 2029 general election approaches, alliance partners must resolve these leadership differences. Otherwise, regional friction could disrupt both state stability and national opposition unity.
