Sushila Karki Becomes Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Following Gen-Z Protests ; PM Modi Sends Congratulations
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Sushila Karki on taking over as Nepal’s acting prime minister in the wake of Gen-Z demonstrations that overthrew the previous KP Sharma Oli administration last week. “My warmest regards to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on her appointment as Prime Minister of the Nepalese Interim Government. He wrote in an online article, “India is still steadfastly committed to the peace, development, and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”
Yesterday, after days of debate over who would lead the Himalayan country when the Oli government fell, Ms. Karki took the oath of office as Nepal’s temporary prime minister. She is the first female head of state in the nation and a ray of hope for the people who want a government free from corruption.

As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries,” the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement yesterday.
Ms. Karki has the backing of the Gen-Z demonstrators who spearheaded the anti-corruption demonstrations in recent months. Following the Oli government’s crackdown on free speech with a social media ban last week, the protests descended into violence. During the disturbances, dozens of government structures, including the parliament, as well as the private homes of prominent figures were attacked and burned.
I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal.
