Chennai: The latest South India weather update indicates that several parts of the region are set to receive much-needed rainfall on Friday, bringing relief from rising temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Showers Lash Tamil Nadu, Chennai To Remain Cloudy
As per the South India weather update, rainfall has already been recorded in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain at isolated locations, along with thunderstorms and lightning in coastal regions, while interior Tamil Nadu is expected to remain largely dry.
In Chennai, residents can expect a partly cloudy sky with light rainfall. Temperatures are likely to range between 34–35°C during the day and 24–25°C at night. The South India weather update also suggests that temperatures will remain near normal until March 21 before rising slightly in isolated pockets.
Kerala Witnesses Thunderstorms and Heavy Showers
Kerala has experienced significant rainfall activity, with thunderstorms and lightning expected to continue over the next two days. According to the South India weather update, Kanjirappally recorded 7 cm of rainfall, while Peerumedu received 4 cm. Other areas, including Vellanikkara, Munakkal, Athirapally, and Cheruvanchery, reported 3 cm each.
Weather systems such as a trough extending from the Gulf of Mannar to south interior Karnataka, along with upper air cyclonic circulations, are driving the current conditions. Despite the rainfall, temperature variations persist, with Palakkad recording a high of 36.9°C and Kannur seeing a low of 20.6°C.
Karnataka Braces for Thunderstorms
The South India weather update highlights that Karnataka is expected to witness fluctuating weather conditions, with thunderstorms likely across several districts until March 20 and 21. Rainfall is expected in southern interior regions, including Bengaluru and nearby areas.

Telangana and Hyderabad See Limited Impact
In Telangana, thunderstorms have been reported, but their impact remains uneven. Hyderabad experienced isolated light rainfall in some areas, while most parts remained dry under cloudy skies. However, a noticeable dip in temperatures has brought temporary relief from the heat, according to the South India weather update.
Andhra Pradesh Likely to Receive Widespread Rain
Andhra Pradesh is expected to witness widespread rainfall over the next three days. Officials have forecast moderate rain and thunderstorms across districts such as Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, and Bapatla.
Widespread rain activity is expected on Friday, followed by scattered showers on Saturday in districts including Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Prakasam.
Heatwave Conditions Ease Across Region
Private forecaster Skymet Weather noted that early March heatwave conditions have eased across much of the country due to recent weather activity. The South India weather update suggests that with multiple systems active, the region is likely to continue experiencing relief from intense pre-summer heat in the coming days.
