GUWAHATI – Assam Assembly Elections 2026 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially signaled the start of its re-election campaign by releasing its first list of candidates for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026. This initial announcement covers 88 crucial seats. It features a strategic blend of seasoned veterans and prominent former rivals.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will once again contest from his traditional stronghold, Jalukbari. He has held this seat consistently since 2001. His candidacy underlines the party’s focus on stability and leadership. Additionally, the list includes high-profile names like Pijush Hazarika and Ranjeet Kumar Dass.
Strategic Shifts and New Entrants

The 2026 list highlights the BJP’s expanding influence. Notably, the party has fielded former Congress heavyweights Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Kumar Borah. This move follows a wave of political shifts in the state. By including these leaders, the BJP aims to consolidate its hold over constituencies like Dispur and Bihpuria.

Furthermore, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has confirmed the polling schedule. Assam will vote in a single phase on April 9, 2026. Voters across all 126 constituencies will head to the polls together. Finally, the counting of votes will take place on May 4, 2026.

Several senior ministers retain their seats in this list. Pijush Hazarika will contest from Jagiroad, while Prasanta Phukan represents Dibrugarh. In the hills, Rupali Langthasa takes the mantle for the Haflong (ST) seat. These choices reflect the party’s intent to maintain its grip on diverse regional pockets.
