Kochi – During his PM Modi Kerala visit on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the recent name change of the state from “Kerala” to “Keralam” as a proud moment for Malayali citizens. Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha, an organization committed to the welfare of fishermen, Modi praised their courage and dedication during the 2018 floods in Kerala.
Highlighting the role of fishermen in disaster response, Modi said, “The fishing community played a crucial role during the 2018 floods, demonstrating unmatched courage and service.” He added that the government has been actively supporting fishermen through initiatives aimed at their safety and empowerment.

PM Modi Highlights 50 Years of Fishermen Welfare and Safety Initiatives
The PM Modi Kerala visit also spotlighted the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha’s 50 years of service for fishermen’s rights. “For five decades, this Sabha has worked tirelessly for fishermen, and the Union government has complemented these efforts through various welfare schemes,” he said. Modi pointed to measures like installing over 4,500 satellite-based transponders on fishing boats to enhance maritime safety.
PM Modi Kerala Visit: From Kochi Airport to Marine Drive Even
Arriving at Kochi International Airport at 11:30 am, Modi traveled by helicopter to the naval base and then by road to Marine Drive for the Sabha’s golden jubilee event. The PM Modi Kerala visit also includes participation in a series of programmes in poll-bound Kerala, including the inauguration of the BJP-led NDA’s election convention.
Emphasizing regional pride, Modi noted that the state’s renaming to “Keralam” reflects its cultural heritage and the government’s focus on empowering local communities. Attendees, especially fishermen, welcomed the Prime Minister’s message of recognition and support for their longstanding contribution to Kerala’s economy and disaster relief efforts.
