Lok Sabha Speaker Controversy Escalates as Amit Shah Defends Om Birla in Parliament Debate

Amit Shah Warns Opposition Against Undermining Speaker Om Birla’s Neutral Role, Calls Motion “Unprecedented” in Parliamentary History

New Delhi : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday strongly criticised the Opposition over the motion seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, terming it an “unfortunate” moment for parliamentary politics. Speaking during the debate, Shah said the motion is unprecedented, noting that it is the first time in nearly four decades such a move has been brought before the House.

“This is not an ordinary moment,” Shah told the Lok Sabha, emphasising that the Lok Sabha Speaker Controversy is serious because the Speaker belongs to the House, not any political party. He added that the Speaker is the guardian of the rights of all members and plays a vital role in maintaining the impartiality of parliamentary proceedings.

Over 13 Hours of Parliamentary Debate

Shah pointed out that more than 42 MPs participated in nearly 13 hours of debate on the motion, reflecting extensive discussion from both treasury and Opposition benches. He reminded the House that Om Birla’s appointment as Speaker had been supported by leaders from both sides, demonstrating the expectation that the Speaker would be allowed to discharge duties independently.

“While disagreement with the Speaker’s decisions is normal, parliamentary tradition recognises the Speaker’s ruling as final,” Shah said. He accused the Opposition of exceeding disagreement, raising questions about the Speaker’s integrity, and threatening the impartiality that the office represents.

Global Implications for India’s Democracy

The Home Minister warned that questioning the Speaker’s loyalty could have broader implications. “Allegations against the Speaker create doubts not just domestically but also internationally about India’s democratic processes,” he said. Shah called the situation “highly unusual,” adding that members traditionally raise concerns directly with the Speaker in private chambers.

“The position of the Speaker has been placed above party lines and is meant to function as a neutral mediator,” Shah explained. He highlighted the constitutional role of the Speaker and stressed that raising such questions publicly undermines parliamentary norms.

Lok Sabha Speaker Controversy: Shah Highlights Rarity of Motions Against Speaker and Upholds Parliamentary Neutrality

Shah concluded by underscoring the importance of respecting India’s parliamentary traditions and institutions, adding that motions against the Speaker are extremely rare in India’s 75-year democratic history. “The Opposition has created an unprecedented situation that questions the very neutrality of the Lok Sabha Speaker, a role designed to safeguard democracy in our House,” he said.

The Lok Sabha Speaker Controversy has since dominated discussions in Parliament, drawing reactions from political leaders across the spectrum and sparking debates about constitutional propriety, parliamentary ethics, and the impartial role of the Speaker.
