Guwahati : Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Biren Singh Engti passed away at the age of 81 on Tuesday at a private hospital in Guwahati. Engti, a respected political figure from Karbi Anglong, was brought to Guwahati from his Diphu residence for treatment.
A Congress party spokesperson confirmed the news, stating, “Engti breathed his last this morning. His mortal remains have been taken to Diphu, where final respects will be paid.”
Political Journey of Biren Singh Engti
Biren Singh Engti served as a five-time Lok Sabha MP representing Diphu constituency and was also a Minister of State during the Rajiv Gandhi government at the Centre. He first entered the Lok Sabha in the 1970s and won his last election to the lower house in 2014. Engti also held the position of Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, where he worked extensively for regional development.
Throughout his political career, Biren Singh Engti was known for his dedication to the people of Assam, particularly the hill regions, and his efforts in strengthening grassroots governance.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief over the demise, saying, “The passing away of Shri Biren Singh Engti, veteran leader from Karbi Anglong and former Union Minister, is a great loss for Assam. His years of service to the people and efforts for the development of the hill regions will always be remembered.”

State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi also mourned the loss, describing it as an “irreparable loss not only to the hill district but the entire political field of the state.” He added, “Deeply saddened at the news of the death of senior leader of Assam Congress, former Union minister and my late father’s friend Biren Singh Engti. May his departed soul rest in peace, and deepest condolences to the bereaved family.”
