A sharp political exchange has once again focused attention on Manipur, as Congress leader Pawan Khera urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the unrest-hit state during his current trip to the North-East.

In a post on X, Pawan Khera used a sarcastic tone, noting that while “poll-bound states are always your top priority,” Manipur “should not be abandoned.” He added that the state “has been burning since 2023, and it is burning again.”

‘Manipur Is Just an Hour Away’

Pawan Khera comments coincided with the Prime Minister’s visit to Assam to inaugurate and flag off development projects worth over ₹5,450 crore. Pointing out the proximity between Assam and Manipur, Khera urged Modi to visit, saying, “You are already in Assam today. Manipur is just an hour away. Please go there as well. Your presence can reassure the people of Manipur.”

In a pointed political gesture, Pawan Khera claimed the Congress party had “even booked” a flight for the Prime Minister from Guwahati to Imphal. Sharing what he described as a flight ticket, he wrote, “As I do not have your number, I am sharing your flight ticket here. Kindly use it and show that the ‘PM CARES’,” taking a swipe at the Centre.

The post quickly went viral online, generating mixed reactions. Supporters amplified the call for Modi to visit Manipur, while critics questioned the theatrics and tone of the message.

Manipur’s Unrest Remains a Flashpoint

Manipur has been grappling with ongoing unrest since 2023, with intermittent flare-ups worsening political tensions. Opposition parties have repeatedly criticised the Centre’s handling of the situation and demanded direct intervention from the Prime Minister.

The government maintains that steps are being taken to restore peace and normalcy. Pawan Khera appeal seeks to intensify political pressure, arguing that a visit by the Prime Minister would send a strong signal of reassurance to residents affected by the continued instability.

There was no immediate response from the Prime Minister’s Office regarding Pawan Khera post.
