NIA Arrest in Manipur Relief Camp Massacre Probe

SILCHAR : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a major breakthrough in the gruesome Manipur relief camp massacre that shook the nation in late 2024. In a statement released Thursday, the NIA confirmed the arrest of Thanglienlal Hmar, alias Boya, a key conspirator involved in the abduction and murder of six women and children in Manipur’s Jiribam district.

The arrest was carried out in a joint operation with Assam Police in Cachar district, which shares a border with Jiribam. The breakthrough marks the first arrest in the months-long investigation into one of the most horrifying episodes of violence during the Manipur ethnic conflict.

Brutal Crime That Shocked the Nation

The victims — a woman, her two daughters, and three grandchildren (aged eight, two, and an infant) — were abducted from a relief camp located next to a CRPF post and a police station. Despite heavy security presence, attackers stormed the camp in November 2024, killing two men on the spot and kidnapping the six members of the same family.

Tragically, their bodies were later recovered from the Barak River, sending shockwaves across Manipur and beyond. The attack sparked widespread outrage and protests in Imphal, with citizens demanding accountability from the N Biren Singh-led government at the time.

Who is Thanglienlal Hmar?

According to the NIA, Hmar played a central role in planning and coordinating the attack on the relief camp. The investigation suggests that the assault was not random but a targeted operation, allegedly linked to deep-rooted ethnic tensions in the state.

Authorities have so far not revealed whether more suspects are under surveillance, but sources suggest that multiple individuals are being tracked, and more arrests could follow soon.

Relief Camp Tragedy Amid Widening Ethnic Unrest

The Jiribam massacre was one of the many violent incidents that occurred during the 2023–2024 Kuki-Meitei ethnic conflict, which forced thousands of people into relief camps. Ironically, these camps, set up as supposed safe zones, turned into targets of coordinated violence.

While 10 gunmen were reportedly killed by security forces during the same attack, it did little to deter public anger. Many questioned how such a well-guarded camp could be so vulnerable, especially with the CRPF and police presence close by.

The tragedy reignited debates about administrative lapses, inter-ethnic tensions, and security failures in the region. Critics have also pointed fingers at political leaders for failing to control escalating violence and safeguarding vulnerable communities.

NIA’s Investigation Gains Momentum

The NIA took over the probe amid national outcry and pressure from civil society groups. With the first arrest now made, officials hope to unravel the full network behind the killings and bring justice to the victims’ families.

A senior NIA officer stated, “The arrest of Hmar is a significant step forward. We are working closely with state police forces and central agencies to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.”

The agency has been collecting forensic evidence, CCTV footage, and call records, while also examining possible links with insurgent groups active along the Assam-Manipur border.
