New COVID-19 Wave Sweeps India: Maharashtra, Kerala Report Surge Amid Omicron Sub-Variant Spread

India Sees New COVID-19 Wave: Maharashtra, Kerala Among States on High Alert

As the world grapples with recurring waves of COVID-19, India is once again seeing a resurgence in coronavirus infections, driven by rapidly spreading Omicron sub-variants such as KP.2 and JN.1.1. Health authorities across several Indian states are on alert, with Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Gujarat witnessing a noticeable rise in daily cases.

Though most infections remain mild, the increased positivity rate, hospital admissions, and surveillance alerts have prompted urgent action at both the state and central levels.

Maharashtra COVID Spike: Mumbai Records Nearly 100 Cases in One Day

Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai, is witnessing a significant uptick. According to the Maharashtra Health Department, the city has recorded 95 new COVID-19 cases in May alone, a sharp jump considering only 106 cases were logged in the entire year before that. Hospitalizations are also rising, with 16 patients currently admitted, prompting transfers from KEM Hospital to Seven Hills Hospital to manage the load.

Authorities have begun testing all cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) for COVID-19, indicating a more proactive testing strategy.

Kerala Reports Highest Infections in South India

In Kerala, the situation is equally concerning. The state reported 182 new COVID-19 cases, the highest in recent days, according to the state health bulletin. Despite the relatively mild symptoms, officials are ramping up genomic sequencing and surveillance to track the spread of new variants.

Health experts have flagged Kerala’s dense population and high inter-state travel as contributing factors to the rapid rise in cases.

Omicron Sub-Variants: KP.2 and JN.1.1 Driving New Surge

Virologists suggest that the current wave is being fueled by fast-mutating Omicron sub-variants, particularly KP.2 and JN.1.1. These variants, while not proven to be deadlier, are more transmissible and may evade immunity from previous infections or vaccinations.

Dr. Asha Sreedhar, a virologist based in Chennai, warns:

“These sub-variants show increased immune escape and could cause reinfections even in fully vaccinated individuals. Caution is necessary, especially among the elderly and immunocompromised.”

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka: Cases Slowly Rising

In Tamil Nadu, 12 new COVID cases were reported in Puducherry, with rising concern over Chennai’s fever cases potentially being linked to the virus. Doctors say fevers previously attributed to influenza are now testing positive for COVID-19.

In Karnataka, the state health minister confirmed 16 active cases, with hospitals on alert for further increases.

Gujarat: Sudden Uptick in Ahmedabad Cases

Gujarat recorded 15 active COVID-19 cases, primarily of the JN.1 Omicron sub-variant. Thirteen of these were detected in Ahmedabad, one in Rajkot, and another in a rural area, signaling a rapid shift from a previously dormant caseload. All patients are quarantined, and genomic testing is underway.

Global Alert: Southeast Asia Reports Parallel Surges

Outside India, countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Vietnam are experiencing similar waves, prompting health alerts and renewed restrictions. India’s geographical proximity to these nations and its porous borders with China increase the risk of variant importation, making border control and surveillance more crucial than ever.

How to Stay Safe During the New COVID Wave

Health experts and government bodies recommend a return to basic COVID-19 safety protocols. Here are essential measures to reduce infection risk:

  • Wear masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.
  • Avoid large gatherings or public events.
  • Stay home if unwell or symptomatic.
  • Sanitize hands frequently, especially after public contact.
  • Avoid non-essential travel, especially to high-risk zones.
  • Consult a doctor if experiencing fever, cough, or fatigue.

Importantly, authorities advise elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with underlying conditions to be extra cautious.
