The literary world fell silent today as Padma Shri awardee and celebrated scholar Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi passed away at the age of 98, leaving behind a rich legacy of intellectual brilliance and cultural contribution. In heartfelt homage, Punjab’s Education and Information & Public Relations Minister, S. Harjot Singh Bains, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a towering figure in Punjabi and Hindi literature.

In his condolence message, S. Bains described Dr. Jaggi as a guiding light for generations of readers, writers, and scholars. “Dr. Jaggi was not just an academician; he was a literary institution in himself. His scholarship, particularly in medieval literature, opened new pathways of understanding and appreciation for countless students and literary enthusiasts,” said the Minister.

A former Head of the Department of Punjabi Literature at Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr. Jaggi earned national and international acclaim for his contributions to language and literature. His distinguished honours include the Padma Shri (2023), Sahitya Akademi Award (1989), and the Punjabi Sahit Shiromani Puraskar—each a reflection of his tireless pursuit of knowledge and cultural preservation.

The Minister extended his condolences to the grieving family, saying, “Punjab has lost a literary giant. The void he leaves behind in our intellectual and cultural landscape is irreplaceable. His life’s work will continue to inspire future generations.”

S. Bains prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family during this difficult time.

Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi’s legacy, rooted in his commitment to literature and education, will live on in the pages of books, the minds of students, and the hearts of all who were touched by his words.
