“Doctors in Karnataka have discovered a never-seen-before blood group, now officially named, ‘CRIB’ after the Bengaluru research Institue”
Bengaluru, July 30:
Doctors at a medical center in Kolar, Karnataka, discovered a previously unknown blood group Antigen in a 38-year-old woman. although her routine blood type was O-positive, none of the donor units, not even from his family matched.
Further testing showed that her blood reacted with all samples, making it difficult to find a compatible match.
Samples were sent to Rotary Bangalore TTK blood Centre and internationally to the international blood group reference laboratory in Bristol.
After 10 months of molecular analysis, researchers confirmed the existence of completely new antigen within the Cromer blood group system. It has been officially named as CRIB, reflecting “Cromer, India, Bangalore”
The rare discovery marks the first ever identification CRIB antigen worldwide. Meanwhile, to support future medical needs a rare-donor registry is being set up by Rotary Bangalore TTK Blood Centre in collaboration with national and international partners.
