NEW DELHI : A routine evening walk turned into a nightmare for a young Manipuri woman assaulted on March 8, 2026. The incident occurred near a park close to the Saket District Court complex. According to the Delhi Police, a group of men allegedly assaulted the woman after she bravely confronted them for harassment.

The victim and her friends were walking when the group began passing lewd and inappropriate remarks. Moreover, when the woman objected to this behavior, the verbal abuse quickly escalated into physical violence. Reports indicate the assailants used belts during the attack. Following the incident, the victim was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital. Fortunately, medical professionals confirmed she suffered only minor injuries and is expected to recover soon.

Rising Concerns Over Safety and Racial Bias in the Capital
This assault has sparked fresh outrage regarding the safety of people from Northeast India in Delhi. Consequently, prominent leaders have voiced their concerns. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma described the attack as “sickening.” He urged authorities to take the most stringent action possible. Additionally, he emphasized that racial bullying must not become a “new normal” in mainland India.

The Delhi Police have invoked relevant provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act alongside sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Specifically, the case involves:

  • Section 79: Acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
  • Section 351(2): Criminal intimidation.
  • Section 196: Promoting enmity between different regional or racial groups.

A Growing Pattern of Discrimination in South Delhi
The Saket incident is not an isolated case. Just last month, three women from Arunachal Pradesh faced a similar ordeal in Malviya Nagar. In that instance, a local couple allegedly hurled racial slurs and mental harassment at the tenants. The Delhi Police eventually sent the accused couple into 14-day judicial custody after a video of the confrontation went viral.

Statistics highlight a worrying trend. The National Annual Report & Index on Women’s Safety (NARI) 2025 ranked Delhi 28th out of 31 cities. Furthermore, 12% of women in Delhi reported facing harassment in public spaces. For the Northeast community, these figures are coupled with the risk of racial targeting. In 2025 alone, Delhi recorded 76 verified hate speech events, contributing to a nationwide rise in such incidents.

Police Response and Community Action
Currently, the Delhi Police are scanning CCTV footage to identify the culprits from the Saket attack. An officer of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) is leading the investigation. Meanwhile, the police remain in constant contact with the victim to ensure her safety and provide updates on the search.

Furthermore, local community groups are demanding better patrolling near the Saket and Malviya Nagar areas. They argue that proactive measures are necessary to prevent the “normalization” of such crimes. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on whether the capital can truly ensure the dignity of all its residents, regardless of their regional identity.
