Kashmir snowfall marks onset of Chillai-Kalan winter phase
Kashmir witnessed a fresh spell of snowfall on Sunday as Chillai-Kalan, the region’s harshest winter period, officially began. Higher reaches across the Valley received snow, while rainfall was recorded in the plains, including Srinagar. The weather shift marked a significant change after weeks of dry conditions, which had raised health concerns among residents.
According to reports, snowfall occurred in popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg and Sonmarg. Sadhna Top also experienced snow accumulation, affecting visibility and travel. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall started overnight in Srinagar and several other low-lying areas. The rain continued intermittently through the morning, adding to the winter chill.
Visuals from Sonmarg showed tourists enjoying the fresh snowfall. The entire region appeared wrapped in a white blanket, enhancing its winter charm. Hotels and local businesses reported steady tourist movement despite the cold conditions.
Roads closed in Bandipora, travel advisory issued
Authorities closed the 86-kilometre Gurez–Bandipora road due to heavy rainfall and snow in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Officials cited safety concerns, as slippery roads and poor visibility posed risks to commuters. They also advised travellers to avoid unnecessary journeys until weather conditions improve.
Several stretches in Bandipora appeared deserted, with snow-covered homes and empty roads dominating the landscape. Local administration teams remained on alert to clear snow and respond to emergencies. Power and water supply lines were also monitored closely, given the likelihood of disruption during sustained snowfall.
In Ladakh, Leh town witnessed fresh snowfall as well. Rooftops, roads, and surrounding mountains disappeared under a thick white layer of snow. Residents prepared for freezing temperatures, as night temperatures are expected to fall sharply over the coming days.
Weather department forecasts more snow and rain
The meteorological department has predicted an increase in snowfall and rainfall across the Valley over the next 48 hours. Officials said western disturbances are likely to remain active, bringing more precipitation to both higher and lower regions. As a result, authorities have stepped up preparedness measures across vulnerable districts.
The fresh precipitation has brought much-needed relief to residents. A prolonged dry spell had earlier led to a spike in common ailments, including respiratory and skin problems. Doctors had linked these issues to low humidity and rising pollution levels during the dry weeks. Therefore, the snowfall is being viewed as beneficial for both health and the environment.
Snowfall was also recorded earlier this month in higher reaches such as Zojila Pass, Minamarg, and Baltal in Ganderbal district. However, the latest spell marks the most widespread snowfall so far this winter season.
Chillai-Kalan significance and government preparedness
Chillai-Kalan is a 40-day period considered the coldest phase of winter in Kashmir. During this time, temperatures often drop below freezing, and water bodies frequently freeze. The period is traditionally associated with heavy snowfall, which replenishes water resources for the rest of the year.
The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, said that all arrangements are in place to handle heavy snowfall. He stated that authorities have prepared snow clearance equipment and emergency response teams. He also urged people to remain patient during temporary hardships.
“Even if we face some hardships due to the snow, I do not think anyone should complain because we have been eagerly awaiting it,” Abdullah was quoted as saying. His remarks reflected the broader sentiment among residents, who see snowfall as essential for agriculture and hydropower generation.
The 40-day Chillai-Kalan period will end on January 30. It will be followed by Chillai-Khurd, known as the small cold phase, and Chillai-Bacha, referred to as the baby cold. Although temperatures remain low during these phases, conditions gradually improve.
Why this snowfall matters for Kashmir
The beginning of Chillai-Kalan is often seen as a positive omen. Adequate snowfall ensures sufficient water supply during spring and summer. It also supports apple orchards and other crops that depend on winter moisture.
Moreover, winter tourism receives a boost during this period. Destinations like Gulmarg attract skiers and snow lovers from across India and abroad. Therefore, the current snowfall is expected to support the local economy, despite short-term disruptions.
As snowfall activity intensifies, residents and tourists have been advised to follow official advisories. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure safety during Kashmir’s harshest winter phase.
