India Strengthens Air Defence as S-400 Missile System Set for Fourth Unit Delivery Next Month

S-400 Missile system delivery from Russia to strengthen IAF network; fifth unit expected by November under defence deal

New Delhi:  The deployment of the S-400 Missile system in India is set to advance further as the fourth unit of the Russian-made S-400 Triumf is expected to arrive in the first part of next month, according to sources in the security establishment.

The latest development in the S-400 Missile induction is expected to significantly strengthen the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) air defence network, enhancing its ability to detect and neutralize aerial threats at long ranges.

India-Russia Defence Deal Progress

India signed a USD 5 billion agreement with Russia in 2018 for five units of the S-400 Missile system. So far, three units have already been delivered and are operational within India’s air defence infrastructure.

Officials have confirmed that the fifth unit of the S-400 Missile system is scheduled for delivery by November, as per the revised timeline agreed between both sides.

Fourth Unit Already Shipped

Sources indicated that the fourth unit of the S-400 Missile system has already been shipped from Russia and is expected to reach India within the next few days. Once deployed, it will further enhance India’s layered air defence capabilities.

Role in Military Operations

The S-400 Missile system reportedly played an important role during Operation Sindoor and was also actively used during the May 7–10 military conflict with Pakistan. Its operational success has reinforced its importance in India’s defence preparedness.

Expansion Plans Approved

Recently, New Delhi approved the procurement of five additional S-400 Missile units from Russia, taking the total planned strength to 10 systems. This expansion is part of India’s broader air defence modernization strategy.

Officials believe the follow-on order will not face major hurdles related to US sanctions, as it is considered an extension of the existing defence agreement.

Training and Deployment

Russia has already trained Indian personnel to operate the S-400 Missile system efficiently. The platform is known for its long-range detection and interception capabilities, making it one of the most advanced air defence systems in the world.

The S-400 Missile continues to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s strategic defence shield and ensuring preparedness against aerial threats.
