India has slipped to 125th position in the India Passport Ranking 2026, according to the latest Global Passport Index released by Global Citizen Solutions (GCS). Although India’s overall score improved slightly compared to last year, several other countries advanced more rapidly, causing India to drop one place from 124th in 2025.
The report evaluates 197 countries and territories by assessing not only visa-free travel but also broader factors such as investment opportunities and quality of life.
Indian Passport Offers Access to 26 Destinations
According to the report, Indian passport holders currently enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 26 destinations. However, the India Passport Ranking 2026 continues to reflect limited global mobility when compared with leading economies.
Since 2021, India has improved only two places, moving from 127th to 125th, indicating gradual but slow progress in strengthening the passport’s global standing.

Unlike traditional passport rankings that mainly focus on visa-free travel, the Global Passport Index measures passport strength across three key pillars—Enhanced Mobility, Investment, and Quality of Living.
The report states that this broader methodology provides a more comprehensive assessment of citizenship by considering economic opportunities and living standards alongside international travel freedom.
Europe Dominates the Global Passport Rankings
The India Passport Ranking 2026 comes as European countries continue to dominate the global list. Sweden secured the top position, followed by Switzerland and Finland, while Singapore remained the only non-European nation in the top 10.
Researchers attributed Europe’s strong performance to a combination of high mobility, stable economies, excellent quality of life, and attractive investment environments.
Ireland Stays Ahead of the UK
For the second consecutive year, Ireland ranked ahead of the United Kingdom. Ireland secured the seventh position, while the UK placed eighth.
The report noted that Brexit continues to influence the rankings, as Irish citizens retain unrestricted freedom of movement across the European Union while also benefiting from the Common Travel Area with the UK.
Major Economies Also Witness Decline
The report also highlighted declines among several developed countries. The United States has dropped to 12th place after topping the rankings in 2021. Canada, Australia, and New Zealand also slipped significantly due to changing immigration policies and reciprocal visa restrictions.
