JAMMU, J&K — Dr. Farooq Abdullah, the President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) and former Chief Minister, survived a harrowing assassination attempt on the night of Wednesday, March 11, 2026. The 88-year-old leader was attending a wedding ceremony in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu when an armed assailant attempted to shoot him from point-blank range.

A Miraculous Escape at Royal Park
The incident occurred at the Royal Park banquet hall during the wedding of a party leader’s son. Dr. Abdullah was accompanied by J&K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Advisor to the CM Nasir Aslam Wani. As the leaders were exiting the venue after dinner, a man identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal approached Dr. Abdullah from behind.

Dramatic CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts reveal that the attacker raised a .32 caliber licensed revolver toward the veteran leader’s head. However, members of Dr. Abdullah’s Z+ National Security Guard (NSG) and J&K Police close protection team reacted with split-second precision. They deflected the attacker’s arm just as he discharged a shot, ensuring the bullet missed its intended target.

Attacker’s 20-Year “Personal Agenda”
The suspect, a 63-year-old resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu, was immediately overpowered by security personnel and thrashed by an angry crowd before being handed over to the police. Authorities at the Gangyal Police Station confirmed that Jamwal was in an inebriated state at the time of the arrest.

During initial interrogation, Jamwal reportedly showed no remorse. He claimed that he had been waiting for an opportunity to target the NC President for nearly two decades, describing the act as his “personal agenda.” While the police have ruled out an immediate terror link, they are investigating how a civilian with a licensed weapon managed to breach a high-profile security perimeter.

Serious Questions Over Security Lapses
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to social media to express his relief and concern. He praised the “close protection team” for their swift action but raised sharp questions about the security protocols.

“Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. There are more questions than answers at the moment, including how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM,” Omar Abdullah posted on X.

Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary also termed the incident a “major security lapse,” noting the absence of adequate local police presence despite multiple high-level protectees being at the same venue. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu zone has launched a detailed probe into the breach.
