EPFO boosts support for families
The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced a major relief measure for the families of its central board employees. From April 1, 2025, the death relief (ex-gratia) amount will rise from ₹8.8 lakh to ₹15 lakh.
This decision, taken by the Central Board of Trustees, aims to strengthen the financial safety net for dependents of employees who lose their lives in service. The payment will be disbursed from the Staff Welfare Fund to the nominee or legal heir of the deceased.
A notification issued by EPFO on August 19, 2025, confirmed the revision. It stated that the move was approved by the Chairman of the Central Staff Welfare Committee and the Central Provident Fund Commissioner.
Annual increase to offset inflation
In addition to the one-time enhancement, EPFO has also introduced an annual 5% increase in the ex-gratia amount. Beginning April 1, 2026, the relief will automatically rise every year.
This step ensures that the assistance remains aligned with inflation and rising living costs. The board noted that the incremental increase will help families manage unexpected expenses better during difficult times.
Two other major changes by EPFO
Alongside the hike in death relief benefits, EPFO has rolled out two significant reforms to simplify claim settlements:
No guardianship certificate needed
Families of deceased employees will now face fewer hurdles when minors are legal heirs. Earlier, they had to submit a guardianship certificate to claim provident fund benefits. The new rule eliminates this requirement, ensuring faster and smoother fund transfers to children.
Simplified Aadhaar update process
EPFO has also eased the process for linking and verifying Aadhaar with the Universal Account Number (UAN). This reform will help members correct or update details without lengthy delays, making it easier for families to access benefits when needed.
Significance of the decision
The Central Board of Trustees, EPFO’s highest decision-making body, includes representatives from the government, employers, and employees. By approving this increase, the board has acknowledged the rising financial burden on families after the loss of a breadwinner.
Experts say the ₹15 lakh relief will provide much-needed security to employees’ dependents. The automatic 5% annual increment is being seen as a progressive move that will prevent the support amount from stagnating.
Conclusion
The latest measures reflect EPFO’s focus on welfare, inclusivity, and simplification of processes. With increased relief, reduced paperwork, and faster Aadhaar updates, the organisation is working to ensure that support reaches families without delays during their most vulnerable times.
