Dalit house surgeon in Siddipet, Telangana dies by suicide after marriage promise broken over caste; senior resident arrested under SC/ST Act.

A 23-year-old Dalit house surgeon at the Government Medical College in Siddipet, Telangana, allegedly committed suicide on January 3 after a senior resident physician, who had promised to marry her, backed out citing caste issues. Authorities said she injected herself with a pesticide in the college residence hall.

A Dalit doctor committed suicide.

Her roommates hurried her to a private hospital in Siddipet when the doctor passed out soon after injecting herself. She was eventually moved to a government hospital in Hyderabad for more advanced care when her condition deteriorated, according to PTI.

She passed away in the wee hours of January 4 despite medical attention. On Monday, authorities confirmed the tragedy and said that attempts to save her life had failed.

Case Filed Under the SC/ST Act and BNS

Police opened a case under the applicable provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after receiving a complaint from the victim’s sister. As part of the ongoing investigation, the suspected senior resident physician has been placed under arrest.

Preliminary investigations, according to police officials, show that the victim and the accused met in July of last year while she was an intern at the Siddipet Medical College. She claims that the senior resident physician, who is from a lower social class, promised her he would marry her.

He then broke the agreement, according to investigators, citing caste distinctions, which profoundly upset the young woman.

According to authorities, she may have taken the drastic measure as a result of this rejection and the events that followed. To determine the order of events and collect more evidence, more research is being done.

A Promising Life Ended

The deceased was from a low-income family and was from the Jogulamba-Gadwal district. Before being accepted into the Siddipet Medical College’s MBBS program in 2020, she attended a social welfare school. She was well-known among her peers for her athletic and intellectual accomplishments, and she was thought to be diligent and dedicated.

Her older sister works as a software engineer, while her parents are daily wage workers.
