BRICS Digital Payment System: India’s Push to Reduce Dollar Reliance

New Delhi prepares to propose interoperable central bank digital currencies and fast payment linkages at the 2026 summit

India is chairing the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026. During this gathering, officials will highlight the proposed BRICS digital payment system.

Furthermore, member nations aim to settle trade directly in national currencies without routing settlements through American banking institutions. However, Indian representatives clarify that the initiative supports payment diversification rather than creating an anti-Western economic alliance.

Strategic Component Primary Technical Mechanism Target Operational Outcome
Fast Payment Linking Connecting platforms like UPI and Pix Instant cross-border retail and trade transactions
CBDC Interoperability Interlinking e-rupee, e-CNY, Drex, and digital ruble Settlement without intermediary conversion currencies
Customs Cooperation Implementing administrative assistance pacts Streamlined border clearance and reduced clearing fees
Value Chain Resilience Executing Action Plan 2026-30 framework Shielding intra-member trade against external shocks

Connecting Digital Currencies and Domestic Networks

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra confirmed that a dedicated task force is evaluating two integration paths.

First, members may link domestic fast-payment networks directly. Second, central banks could establish technical bridges between their digital currencies.

Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal reiterated that India opposes creating a common BRICS currency. Instead, the goal focuses entirely on simplifying local-currency trade via the BRICS digital payment system.

Mitigating Global Shocks and Operational Challenges

Establishing seamless interoperability remains a primary technical hurdle.

Because member nations use distinct technological architectures, central banks must standardize ledger protocols before full deployment. Additionally, several economies are still conducting pilot tests.

Nevertheless, successfully deploying this architecture provides clear advantages. Specifically, direct local-currency settlements insulate members from liquidity squeezes and high transaction fees.

Consequently, the BRICS digital payment system offers a practical model for international economic cooperation. Building a resilient BRICS digital payment system ensures long-term trade stability.
