Trump Says India Offered ‘Zero Tariff’ Deal on US Goods — Could This Be a Game-Changer?

As trade tensions ease, Trump hints at a breakthrough deal that could reshape India–US economic ties

In a surprising turn of events, former US President Donald Trump has claimed that India has offered a deal with “basically zero tariff” on a wide range of American goods — a potential breakthrough in what has been a tense trade relationship between the two countries in recent years.

Trump: India Offers Zero Tariff Deal on US Exports

Trump made the remark while speaking in Doha during his ongoing West Asia tour, suggesting that talks with India have taken a promising direction. “India offered us a deal, basically zero tariff,” he said, without going into details about which products the deal might cover or when it would come into effect.

No Comment Yet from India, But Speculation Is Rife

So far, New Delhi hasn’t officially responded to Trump’s comments, leaving a lot of room for speculation. Are we talking about a full-blown tariff-free agreement across major sectors, or just a few selected American exports? Until we hear from Indian officials, it’s anyone’s guess.

But the timing of this claim is notable — especially since the US had recently paused additional tariffs on Indian exports for 90 days, from April 10 to July 9, showing that both sides might finally be trying to turn down the heat.

The Trade Tensions: A Quick Recap

Earlier this year, Trump introduced a sweeping tariff policy targeting nearly 60 countries, including India. Indian exporters of shrimp, steel, and other goods were hit hard, with a 26% levy placed on several key items.

India, in turn, had to weigh its response carefully — juggling economic interests, diplomatic ties, and domestic political pressures.

What’s Really Driving This Deal?

Let’s be honest — Trump’s push for trade deals isn’t just about diplomacy. It’s also about domestic manufacturing and reducing the US trade deficit, a cornerstone of his economic agenda.

From India’s perspective, the stakes are equally high. A favorable deal could provide much-needed relief to struggling export sectors and pave the way for stronger investment and technology ties with the US.

Talks ‘Going Great,’ Says Trump — But What’s Next?

Just a day before his Doha statement, Trump had spoken in Michigan, where he said trade talks with India were “going great” and hinted that a deal might be just around the corner. That’s encouraging — but also raises questions about what’s being offered, and at what cost.

A Big Win for Both Countries? Maybe.

If the zero-tariff proposal is real — and if it actually gets finalized — it could mark a huge shift in how the two countries do business. For the US, it means greater access to Indian markets. For India, it offers a way to soften the blow from recent tariff hikes and stabilize an increasingly fragile trade environment.

With the July deadline looming and trade talks in full swing, both Washington and New Delhi will be under pressure to deliver something concrete. And if that “something” really is a zero-tariff deal, it might just be the reset their relationship needs.
