Bombay High Court Notice in RIL Gas Theft Case
In a major legal development, the Bombay High Court has issued a notice on a petition seeking a CBI probe in the Reliance Industries Ltd gas theft case. The petition accuses Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), led by chairman Mukesh Ambani, of illegally extracting natural gas worth $1.55 billion from blocks operated by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). The allegations span nearly a decade and have revived discussions on energy sector governance.
Filed by Mumbai-based petitioner Jitendra P. Maru, the plea seeks the registration of a criminal case against RIL and its directors. According to the petition, the company engaged in extraction methods that diverted ONGC’s gas for its own commercial gain.
Petition Alleges Massive Illegal Gas Extraction
According to the complaint, the alleged activity occurred between 2004 and 2013-14 at the KG-D6 basin in the Krishna-Godavari region. The petitioner states that RIL extracted ONGC’s gas either “sideways” or through direct drilling into the Northern Areas adjacent to ONGC’s fields. Moreover, the estimated value of this extraction stands at more than $1.55 billion, which equals roughly ₹13,000–14,000 crore.
