Punjab Sikhya Kranti: Harpal Singh Cheema Launches Major Development Projects to Revamp Government Schools Across Punjab
Chandigarh/Dirba/Sangrur, April 7, 2025 – In a significant step towards reforming the state’s education sector, Punjab Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema inaugurated key development projects in government schools under the ambitious ‘Punjab Sikhya Kranti’ initiative. The event marked a pivotal moment in the state government’s efforts to enhance the quality of education and school infrastructure across Punjab.
Punjab Sikhya Kranti: A Vision for Transforming 20,000 Government Schools
Launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the ‘Punjab Sikhya Kranti’ initiative is aimed at completely overhauling the state’s 20,000 government schools. The Punjab government has already started to upgrade nearly 12,000 of these schools. Through this initiative, the state plans to equip schools with state-of-the-art facilities, better infrastructure, and world-class teaching resources.
During the inauguration ceremony, Finance Minister Cheema highlighted the commitment of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in bringing about change after years of neglect in the education sector. “This government has increased the education budget by 57 percent in its first year alone,” Cheema said, emphasizing the focus on both academic excellence and student welfare.
Major Development Projects Across Villages Kamalpur, Mauran, and Dirba
The development projects inaugurated on April 7 involved an investment of Rs 108.61 lakh, aimed at improving the facilities of government schools in various parts of Punjab, including Kamalpur, Mauran, and Dirba.
In Kamalpur, the high school received Rs 41.19 lakh for infrastructure development. Similarly, the Government Senior Secondary Smart School in Mauran was allocated Rs 13.65 lakh, while the prestigious Comrade Bhim Singh School of Eminence in Dirba saw an investment of Rs 53.77 lakh. These investments will support the modernization of classrooms, enhancement of teaching resources, and the creation of student-centric learning environments.
Education Reforms and Teacher Training Initiatives
One of the major pillars of the Punjab Sikhya Kranti initiative is the focus on teacher training. Harpal Singh Cheema revealed that for the first time in Punjab’s history, the government is sending teachers abroad for advanced training. This initiative will help educators adopt global best practices and bring innovative teaching methodologies into the classroom.
“By focusing on both infrastructure and teacher quality, we are ensuring that our children receive an education that prepares them for the future,” Cheema added. He also mentioned the recruitment of around 20,000 new teachers, which provides fresh employment opportunities to locals and strengthens the education system at the grassroots level.
Fostering Academic Excellence with Schools of Eminence
Under the Punjab Sikhya Kranti initiative, the state government has set up several Schools of Eminence across Punjab. These schools are equipped with specialized subject-specific labs, educational parks, and transportation facilities to ensure students have access to a well-rounded education. The new infrastructure also includes separate toilets for boys and girls, security guards, and sanitation workers to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
The results of these efforts are already visible. Around 200 government school students have successfully passed the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), a testament to the positive impact of these reforms. The government has committed to further expanding the Schools of Eminence model, offering students an opportunity to thrive in a competitive academic environment.
Combating Drug Abuse: The ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ Campaign
In addition to the focus on education, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema also spoke about the government’s efforts to address the rampant drug abuse crisis in the state. As the Chairman of the Yodh Nashian Virudh Cabinet Sub-Committee, Cheema emphasized that strict action is being taken against drug traffickers, while efforts are also being made to provide proper treatment and rehabilitation for victims of addiction.
“Punjab’s battle against drugs involves not only fighting trafficking but also providing support to those affected by this epidemic,” Cheema explained. Measures such as anti-drone systems to curb smuggling across the Pakistan border and new recruitment in the Punjab Home Guard are among the strategies being implemented to reduce the flow of illegal drugs into the state.
