Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains Slams Critics, Champions Transformative Reforms Under ‘Sikhya Kranti’

Chandigarh/SAS Nagar, April 7, 2025 – Punjab’s Education Minister, S. Harjot Singh Bains, launched a strong counterattack on political opponents, accusing them of hypocrisy and self-interest in their criticism of the state government’s education reforms. Addressing the inauguration of new facilities under the Punjab government’s ‘Sikhya Kranti’ initiative at the Government Senior Secondary School, Phase-11, Mohali, Bains emphasized the substantial progress made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government in revamping the state’s public education system.

Punjab’s Educational Transformation: A Commitment to Quality

In his speech, S. Harjot Singh Bains outlined the dramatic improvements that have occurred in Punjab’s education system since the AAP took power. “We inherited approximately 20,000 government schools in deplorable conditions—without boundary walls, without proper bathrooms, and lacking basic educational facilities for our children. Today, nearly every government school in Punjab has boundary walls, functional toilets for both girls and boys, furniture, clean drinking water, and WiFi connectivity in over 90% of the schools,” he remarked.

Bains took the opportunity to hit back at the critics of the ‘Sikhya Kranti’ initiative, particularly those who, according to him, turned a blind eye to the dire state of government schools for years. “When Punjab’s education system was failing, they remained silent. Now that our children are thriving, they feel threatened,” Bains said, referring to opposition leaders who he claimed were uncomfortable with the state’s progress in public education.

‘Sikhya Kranti’: A Fight Against the Private School Mafia

The Education Minister also highlighted the broader goals of the reforms, focusing on providing quality education to every child in Punjab, especially in government schools. He referred to the efforts as a battle against the “private school mafia” that, according to him, thrived at the expense of public education. “It is a fight against the private school mafia and powerful negative forces that profited from the neglect of government education,” Bains asserted.

He criticized those who, despite their children attending expensive private schools with modern amenities, were uncomfortable with public schools offering the same level of education and facilities. “The opponents are comfortable when their children attend expensive private schools with security guards and modern facilities, but feel threatened when poor children receive the same quality education,” he remarked.

Educational Achievements: A Testament to Reform

Bains also highlighted the success of the government’s reforms, citing the remarkable achievement of 189 students from government schools clearing the prestigious JEE Mains examination. This accomplishment, he argued, was clear evidence that the reforms were paying off and that government schools could deliver high-quality education.

Additionally, Bains emphasized his personal involvement in ensuring the proper implementation of these reforms, stating that he had visited over 1,200 schools in districts like Ferozepur, Fazilka, and Tarn Taran. “I’ve visited these schools multiple times to make sure the changes promised are being effectively implemented on the ground,” he said, underlining his commitment to ensuring tangible improvements in the education sector.

While acknowledging the scale of the challenge—transforming 20,000 schools serving around 28 lakh students—Bains emphasized the progress made in just three years. He stressed that the journey was ongoing, but the significant strides made so far should not be underestimated. “If every child in Punjab receives quality education, wouldn’t that benefit us all? Education will thrive, Punjab will thrive, and our children will thrive,” Bains concluded, urging unified support for the government’s mission.

Bains called for collective efforts to fulfill the dream of providing quality education for every child in Punjab. His message resonated with the government’s broader vision of inclusivity and long-term educational success, even as he emphasized that political rivalry should not obstruct the progress being made in Punjab’s schools.
