India Healthcare Self Reliance : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that India is rapidly moving towards becoming self-reliant in healthcare through advanced medical research, indigenous technologies, and affordable treatment solutions.
Addressing the 22nd convocation ceremony of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, Singh said that the country’s health system has become more accessible, affordable, modern, and people-centric compared to earlier times.
The minister highlighted that India healthcare self reliance is being strengthened through developments in gene therapy, nuclear medicine, medical equipment manufacturing, and other modern healthcare technologies.
Indigenous Medical Innovations Strengthening Healthcare
Rajnath Singh said Indian scientists have successfully developed indigenous gene therapy for treating haemophilia, while researchers have also created advanced nanomedicine solutions for breast cancer treatment.
He added that the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has provided momentum to domestic manufacturing of medical equipment, helping India reduce dependence on imports.
The minister also mentioned the development of Nafithromycin, India’s first indigenous macrolide antibiotic, which can help in treating Community-Acquired Bacterial Pneumonia.

India Advances in Affordable Modern Treatments
Highlighting India’s achievements in medical technology, Singh said the country developed its first indigenous MRI machine in 2023, which is affordable, lightweight, and advanced.
He also spoke about the success of CAR-T cell therapy, describing it as one of the most important developments in cancer treatment. India has developed one of the world’s most affordable CAR-T therapies, making advanced cancer treatment accessible to more patients.

Jan Aushadhi Kendras Expanding Affordable Medicine Access
Rajnath Singh said that more than 19,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country are providing quality medicines at affordable prices to citizens.
He emphasised that the objective of healthcare development is not only providing treatment but also creating a system that is affordable, accessible, and focused on quality.
Uttar Pradesh Healthcare Infrastructure Sees Major Expansion
The Defence Minister also highlighted improvements in Uttar Pradesh’s healthcare infrastructure under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership.
He said that the number of medical colleges in the state has increased significantly from 17 before 2017 to 81 currently. He added that Uttar Pradesh now has two AIIMS and has achieved the milestone of having medical college facilities across districts.

Rajnath Singh said doctors and medical professionals have an important role in shaping the future of healthcare and encouraged them to continue learning and adopting new technologies.
